Finding your way around

A plain-language guide to every page and what is on it. Use the links at the top, or Alt and the number shown. Press H in your screen reader to jump between the pages below.

When the app opens, you start on its own heading at the very top, which names the app and the version you are running. Underneath it, the unit you are connected to is read out as soon as it has been found, and again if it is ever unplugged. The page links are one Tab below, and the page itself is one press of H away. Moving to another page puts you on that page's heading. One more control sits after the last page link, on every page: a button that turns dark mode off and on, whose label tells you which way it is set.

One thing worth knowing about the Tab key: the end of a page is a hard stop. Tab on the last control does not wrap round to the top, it stays where it is and plays a short low tone, so you can tell you have reached the end rather than quietly finding yourself back at the beginning. Shift and Tab still walks backwards, and headings, landmarks, the links at the top and Alt with a number all still get you anywhere on the page.

And one about dropdowns. Any dropdown that changes what you HEAR waits for an Apply button, and nothing is sent to the unit until you press it. That is because arrowing through a closed dropdown is how a screen reader reads one, and every one of those presses counts as a choice: without the Apply, browsing the mic type list would put your mic through four different preamps on the way past. Usually the button sits directly after its own dropdown; where two dropdowns are really one decision, as on the Recording page, they share a single Apply that follows both and sends only what you changed. Each dropdown's own description says which Apply it is waiting for. Dropdowns that only change what you are LOOKING at, such as which channel or which output you are working on, act straight away and have no Apply, because there is nothing to undo. Switches are instant too: you cannot change one by arrowing past it.
